A friend was asking about Chromecast and I realise I know little about them, but given their recent price drops they seem like an attractive buy at the moment, a few questions though.

Does it make viewing youtube on my TV easier? I have a Samsung smart TV but the youtube app is useless, so slow to navigate and cant filter search results, eg search for a popular channel and it brings up results from years back from that channel not listed by most recent. #

Can it completely mirror what is on my android phone onto my TV screen? Browsing the web, games, browsing RightMove app etc?
Can it do the above with whats being shown on an ipad?

Chromecast noob!

Yes, it makes viewing Youtube easier, as you'll be finding and controlling the videos from the Youtube app on your phone/tablet.

It can only fully mirror what's shown on your Android device if it's supported. See here for a list of supported devices: https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/6059461?hl=en-GB

For iOS devices, only apps with Chromecast support can cast to the TV. This does include Youtube however.

Another advantage is more than one device can connect to the Chromecast at the same time. I sometimes do this with my HTC One and my brother's iPad when we want to create a Youtube playlist to watch on the TV.

I watch a lot of YouTube and have a few Samsung TV's and the YouTube experience via Chromecast is just awesome no comparison.
Even though I use a few htpc's I have 3 Chromecast's for Plex and YouTube etc. Best purchase of 2014 for me :D

Yes, I also have a Samsung smart TV and the app is similarly useless, so I use my Chromecast instead. Basically you just navigate the app as you would if you were viewing content on your mobile device, and then tap the cast icon to throw a video at the TV. Works pretty well.

It can mirror your screen but only if your phone is on the list. Not all Android phones work and no-one's really sure why, but Nexus devices work and so do a fair few others. I don't think screen mirroring works at all from an iPad, but you can use some iPad apps with the Chromecast e.g. YouTube.
