Cigar Aficionados

I have a couple of boxes I brought back form Cuba a few months ago but no Humidor to keep them in. What should I do with them?

Snaplock tupperwear boxes are a good alternative. Have a search for 'Tupperdor' on Google and you'll find lots of mentions. It's what I use, and my cigars are nice and fresh.

Well this turned up with a small bit of damaged but they have since replaced it with another. They must have been very out of pocket after import tax and postage costs from Miami and i don't think they will be picking the damaged one up as it will put them even more out of pocket so not sure what to do with it at the moment. They did mention when the claim first went in to keep it in the original packaging ready for collection but after several reminders from me about them picking it up they still haven't. What do people normally do when this happens ?

Drop them an email asking if they actually want you to dispose of it?
Saves them the postage back and further possible import duty.
Then donate it to a loving home? ;) :p

They'll be dried out. They could be ****ed. Unless you've kept them in a particularly humid environment. You'll need to revive/rehydrate them. Which could take a couple weeks depending on how bad they are. Cigar shops can do it for you if you haven't the time, patience or know how. But if you're going to get boxes of cigars, unless you intend to smoke them all within a day or two, get a humidor. Nothing worse than a dry cigar. It's like trying to smoke a flaky puff pastry.

I have emailed Cuban Crafters about returning the damaged humidor about 2 weeks ago but they haven't responded so i presume they don't want it back. :)

HELP!! Came back after only 1 week away and this has happened :(

None of it is white blossom, definitely mould :( All ruined?!

Can you guys recommend me a decent humidor as I guess it is misreading which is why I topped it up earlier than I should have and caused it to be too moist. I know I could just replace the individual components but I feel it's time to upgrade anyway.

I'm off to Cuba in November. Any suggestion on Cigar's I should get. I used to smoke (not cigars) many years ago, so I will be having 1 or 2 at the most during my holiday but I am interested to know if there are particular great ones, I should enjoy whilst there, or are cigars in Cuba like car in japan, there all good. :D

Depends on your taste. I haven't been to Cuba but I've heard that anything from a street vendor is almost certainly a fake (although some of the fakes are supposedly amazing!) Buy from a Habanos store. Try some different vitolas to find a sweet spot, i.e. how long do you want the smoke to last and how do you want it to smoke, and then go exploring the various flavours.

It doesn't get a good rep from seasoned reviewers and smokers, but one cigar I always recommend to new smokers is the Fonseca No. 1. It's an easy smoke, lasts about 30-45 minutes, and is quite easy on the pallete. Because it is so mellow, it's quite easy to extract the various flavours on offer, making it enjoyable. A lot of beginners go straight for a Cohiba Robusto or a Bolivar and get turned off because theyre too strong to enjoy and to taste. Start with something mellow.

Thanks Scuzi. I was so looking forward to the Beliscosos :( 5 are pretty much done for. The monty is fine it cleaned off, the Partagas is suspect still. I have a feeling it could have been contaminated at the last BBQ. What a waste.

I have it on 72 when it gets fuller as usually I need to, but it's an analogue gauge and falls off from time to time so I'm not sure of its accuracy any more, I'll definitely be keeping it lower from now on :(

I like a nice discrete humidor, mines a simple black box on the outside. Probably double the current size, mines an adorini but I have no idea who are the makers to go with for humidors. If there's the option of having built in digital hygrometer I'd prefer that but it doesn't matter too much. I'll order some Heartfelt Beads, thanks.

Oh wow! Haha I quite like that actually :D Are there any brands which go away from the antique look? Do you know who are the 'quality' makes to look for? Cheers :)

The first one of those i had sent from the U.S had a small area of damage so they sent me a replacement. It still sits in the spare room boxed up! If i remember Scuzi has the same one.

Cool, it does look decent. I've seen a couple of names like Prometheus and Diamond Crown thrown about, I'm liking The Jefferson. But some models are silly money!

Re-read what i posted and doesn't read right to me, i meant the damaged one is still boxed up not the replacement.

Having read a few of the above post, am I right in thinking bringing any Cigars back from Cuba is going to be a waste of time? It seems they are need of special storage, and that jut keeping them in a box isn't going to be enough.

Ideally they need to be kept in a humidity and temperature controlled environment, although 24 hours of variance would be acceptable if they went straight into a humidor at the other end. The cigar boxes are designed to maintain a reasonable atmosphere for a period outside of a humidor. You can get what is called a "herfador", a mini travel humidor but they're generally made for a few cigars rather than boxes. Your other option would be to make yourself a "tupperdor", essentially a Tupperware box with some humidity control medium in there, ideally some regulating beads.

Yes, but without proper care, which I doubt I will bother with, they can't just be kept in small box, under a desk. Basically they aren't going to survive without being looked after.

Any advice on what a non smoker should try?

I recently had friends with cigars while out drinking and quite liked a puff! I've never been a smoker as it;s just never appealed to me, but there seemed to be something nice about a cigar with a drink!

All I've tried so far was a big cuban type thing, and a skinny thing not much bigger than a ciggarete with a chocolatey/cocoa flavour to it
