I've been meaning to dabble with cigars for a while now, as occasionally when I'm out, usually at a nice country pub, I'll find myself near somebody smoking a cigar and I absolutely love the smell that it produces. Plus it'll make poker / game nights that bit more authentic :p

I have a good no. of cigar shops near me but I don't want to go in looking too ignorant, so i'm looking into what I should look for in order to get started. Obviously I'll need a good lighter, cigar cutter, but after that I have no idea as to what type of cigars to start with. Obviously something that's quite mild, but after that i'm fairly clueless.

So any tips / advice for a cigar newbie? :)

Try looking here:

You can view a certain number of reviews per week without having to sign up.

I'm not a fan of strong cigars and I currently have:

Montecristo No.4s
El Rel dale Mundo Choix Supremes
Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2s
Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robustos
Partigas Series D No.4s
Ramon Allones Specially Selecteds

It's very much about personal taste, so you literally have to suck it and see.

Yes, do not bother. They smell rancid and they kill you.

Cigars smell nothing like cigarrettes, and they have a very unique smell which you either love or hate.

As for killing you - your doing it wrong. AFAIK, you are never supposed to actually enhale the smoke, more just breath it.

May not be accurate

Throat cancer ***!

If you don't inhale then its not getting into your lungs/throat.

You could get mouth cancer though :) I wouldn't advise inhaling a cigar, I did it one new year when I was battered and was promptly coughing for my life.

I think the idea is to NOT inhale. Although I think hardcore smokers like my old man do, just because his lungs are made of iron.

In terms of health implications, yes it depends on how you smoke, and how many you smoke I think.

If you're smoking one or two a month, and merely taking the smoke into your mouth then the health effects are almost negligible. Much less of a risk that getting hammered every Friday night.

If you're actually inhaling the smoke, and smoking 5 a week, then yes, it is risky.

i'd heard that too but as a smoker I can't help but inhale when presented with a moutful of smoke

Get a clue please.

Honestly, smoking a very occasional cigar (a few per year) is going to have negligible impact on your health. If you enjoy it, go for it.
