2nd hand...
I've tried airing it out with a fan.. Tried wiping all the surfaces with isopropyl alcohol, even took the back cover off and wiped what I could there, without getting things too wet..

But when it's running hot... the smell just comes back.. Even on the fingers from the keys. It seems that 'rubbery' finish on everything really keeps the scent..
Anyone got any great methods?

That smell sticks around for aaaages.

Try vinegar on the chassis and maybe an ozone treatment over the motherboard and so on.

See if you can find someone with an ultrasonic cleaner that you can sink the components into (I don’t know if you can rent them or what, I just knew someone who worked in a lab who had access to one)

They are used to clean things like fuel injectors so they get down deep into the various nooks and crannies and they can do PCBs.

Basically, you’ll need to pull it apart and clean each component though and by hand, that’s a pain and less effective than a sound bath.

It’s a tar residue so it’ll need to be thorough.

To be honest unless you can get hold of specialist equipment like jolly mentioned you can't fully clear it. Although knowing xps laptops that's normally the least of issues, my xps 9560 always throttled and seem common on all xps laptops as every model since at work seems to get complaints of some sort.

Anyway back to topic, could try a full strip and good old rub with ipa? Although in honesty I'm not convinced you will ever fully clear the smell.

Thanks for the suggestions.. Over time the smell has lessened.. I guess I'll try again with the alcohol but I'm not really willing to pull it all apart even if it's just a few hundred quid..
