Circular Polariser Filters

yup, i've found that now! :(

I find that I have to focus the camera first, then twist *** polariser to get the desired effect *after* i've focused! :(

I assume that a circular polariser will keep the image constantly polarised through my viewfinder?

Greg

Only if the front element of the lens does not rotate when focusing.

The circular linear thing affects metering, (most ttl cameras need the Circular type due to the way scattered light is expected in the metering algorithms) and AF (due to the phse splitting in the AF). Your AF camera might refuse to focus through a linear polarizer.

Both linear and circular polarizers need adjusting for effectiveness due to light incidence angle.

Wikipdias entry on this is pretty easy to follow.

I'm confused. I thought they were a lot more than that. In fact I have a trade pricelist that confirms it. I bought mine here - http://www.hoya-online.co.uk/prdprod1pcir77.htm @ £125

EDIT: Well known retailer has this filter at £159.99 inc.

That was the first place I went to buy it, as I have used them before, and many others had it at around the £125....... sorry I thought they had it at rrp, so it's even more !!!

Well at the risk of bending your forum rules Spie you could search for this number 250121525700 on place that has lots of things for sale !! ;)
Looks like the right one to me....

how well do cpl work with p&s cameras ??? i have a pana fz50 due to arrive soon and am just wonder if it will work as well as some of the pics on here have :)

I have a Polrizer for my GR1v, it's a pain to us though as i have to take it off and work out where the little dot needs to be fo a desired effect on every shot. I also need to adjust the metering as the camera does not meter TTL. (though It does not have the benifit of being a digital so it's weeks before I work out I cocked up)

Having said this, it works fine, it just takes me time to get it sorted.

Even over here they're not much better, 77mm Circular Polarizing Pro 1 Digital Multi-Coated Glass Filter for $195 US so thats around about 100 pounds... Not quite sure how they get the HK ones to be sooo cheap.

Something not right there. Nobody sells a product at 1/3 of the best price available without it being stolen, faulty or counterfeit. Unless it really is some very limited (big) loss leader.

i believe there are various levels of them for want of a better word

the one you mentions is the pro 1 which is kind of top of the range

i bought a KOOD 58mm Circular Polarizer CPL lens filter from that online auction site for less than £20 (it did come from hong kong) and it works.

if you look at through it, in the correct conditions and turn it, you can visibly see the effect.

Now, I imagine than better one would have a much more pronounced effect, but to be honest I am happy with my cheapo kood.

I have two CP filters from Hoya. one is designated 'PRO', I don't really notice much difference in the polarization. The pro filter is thinner and supposedly has better coating on the glass, and should not cut light levels as much.

I think the cost of it was about £70 when I got it (though it was thrown in on a lens purchase), but i'm not really sure it's worth the extra. If I need another, i'll look for a middle of the range filter.

Whilst I can't speak from first-hand experience I know that a lot of people have purchased the 77mm Pro version from that source and haven't heard a bad word - and thats the regular price form that source, no oneoff/loss leader.

I bought a Kood CPL for my cokin P mount. Used it on holiday last week and the effect was very clear as i turned the P mount. Pool water went from very shiny to very blue and being able to see the bottom of the pool.
More than happy with the kood and the price i paid for it.

It's around the HK price, so perhaps someone makes trips that way for business and brings some back each time ????
The feed back is good, like I say, a full in depth review to follow, assuming it arrives. :)
