Hi

We have 2 Cisco 2950 switches. One has a date of 2004 and the other 2005.

When I access the switches using their ip the 2005 has a much better interface with smartport settings etc. The 2004 has a really basic interface.

How can I make the 2004 one like the 2005 one?

Thanks

By using the CLI :D
You would have to check the downloads section for that device on cisco.com and see if any upgrades were available. The improved GUI will no doubt come with the newer version of IOS.

I tried registering on Cisco but when it got to the 2 security questions part it wouldn't let me past that

These switches were given to a charity I help out so if anyone is willing to talk me through how to update the switch it would me much appreciated (as I only have a basic level of networking knowledge). This can be done over MSN if you prefer.

Also one more question, when connecting 2 switches together do I need a patch or crssover cable as the patch cable doesn't seem to work?

cisco switch to switch = x over

sdm is pretty awful tbh but i believe it is possible to download without a smartnet contract

IOS doesn't really have a GUI, some of the Cisco boxes can run SDM on them, which is what your switch is running at a guess.

The switches come with their own gui. It isnt SDM (Security Device Manager).
Fairly sure it comes with the IOS downloads, if not they may have seperated them into their own section after the CCO download redesign.
The GUI software is certainly on the CD that comes with the switch/router though!

Actually to my surprise I have just checked & it is possible to download switch ios without a contract.
There is one shown as:-

C2950 EI AND SI IOS CRYPTO AND WEB BASED DEVICE MANAGER

But I guess the actual image you require will be based on the available flash on your switch.

There may not be a need for me to try and update the GUI if this works:-

On the 2005 switch port 1 is set to cisco switch. If I connect a xover cable from port 1 to any port on the 2004 switch will this link them together?

All I need to do is link the 2 switches together.

Thanks

You wont legally be able to download software updates without a valid service contract attached to your Cisco.com ID.

What are you trying to configure the switches to do?
