Cisco 877

Ok i have few off these around my company

i Have a CCNA and do not think its rocket seicenc seting these things up

But i buying a cisco product like buying an exotic car (you get the base product but every thing els cost more for the add on)

I got the 877 for QoS and the vpn part plus it was nice little bit kit to

But i did not like the fact if i ever need to upgrade the IOS i need a netsmart account and would have to pay over the odds for yr service ?

so my first question to any ppl that deal with cisco products a lot who no of company that do netsmart acount for nice price all i need is the IOS software and not intrest in all the rest

my 2nd question to this is the QoS part when i got this i did know that i need an extea 8mg flash card to run QoS but i have been doing some reading on some other fourms while looking for smart net acount and theres loads of difrent software builds in the 12.4(4) T2 and the one that comes with the ruter listed in this part mite not be the QoS build but can not find any info on cisco website if this true or not

Do i need a diffrent software build to get QoS up and running


Any help would so nice as i dont wont to pay £X for 8meg cisco flash card 5 of them i need and they not cheap just to find out i need a difrent IOS build to make it work


(I am wishing that i stuck with some nice cheap routers and gone down difrent route as if i need smart net account to upgrade its looking very expensive )

you would need a Smart net for the IOS upgrades, main types for the 877 are adv IP security and Adv IP Services, the latter having a bigger feature set. At the moment the IP services IOS (currently 12.4.9) will fit on the normal 24 meg of flash (it does on mine but its a squeeze, had to delete the SDM). I believe the normal ADV IP security image has QOS but the ADV IP services has many more options to do with it. Anyways, there are people on here with far cisco know how than me so hopefully they will answer too

There are different versions - 12.4(4)T2 is one. There are umpteen versions up from that to 12.4(9)T, but they all fall into the two feature sets - Advanced IP Services and Advanced Security.
The main features from version to version are more or less the same within the same feature set. Some new things appear though, but it's debatable how much of it has any value.

You need 64MB of flash (5*8 = 40 + 24 the router came with = 64)?

when i check cisco web on spec it says this to make QoS work


plus i have tryed my best to make it work

If i try and use SDM just says the ios your running dont support this

and if i try set it up the proper way (lol) not a lot happens

also just to add I had look in side one last night and this has confused me so much

1 theres dram slot in there thats ok i understand that

2 there a chip in there thats in a sodim dlot it looks like with intel on it

3 there empty slot that looks like flash crad slot but on there specs it says there no spear one and i am now lost do i need just 8meg flash or to complet replace the other one and what are these to slot's

pls any help be very very nice

my guess is that you are running an older version of the sdm, the previous versions didnt support QOS and Intrution Detection untill 2.3. 2.32 can be download from the cisco site without a smartnet contract which should allow you to configure these things. If the router has the older sdm (2.2) its probably got the older IOS as well though, mine came with 12.3.8 whearas 12.4.9 is out now.

You would have to install the sdm on your PC not the router

also in a corprate enviroment, it would be best to learn the CLI commands as the SDM can be very easily tripped up and would mess up the configuration

By default, it should have 24MB flash and 128MB of RAM.
