Hi Chaps,

I had to do a full reset on my Cisco 877 over the weekend, which i needed to go in to the ROM Monitor prompt to do a complete reset on the router. So i reset the config as normal using "confreg 0x2142" then it prompts me to reset the router.

Now this is where the fun and games start. The router reloads as normal, all the lights come up then go off at which put i would normally see a output via the console cable in putty. However, i dont get any form of output on the screen.

Does any one have any ideas?

Thanks

Andy

hmm, do you not get any output at all? when it's doing the post you should get something, and at the very least, drop back into rommon where you'll be be able to boot from flash / tftp if you borked the image on the flash

If you typo'd it's possibile that you changed the baud speed on the comm port of the router - which would account for not seeing anything at all....

Try connecting with differnt baud rates until you see text - you'll need to press enter a few times to see if it's worked.

Unless you needed to do a password reset there are easier ways to erase the config - write erase from priv exec - router# - will do it. Dropping into 0x2142 will only get the router to ignore the startup config, it'll still there, just not being used. (sorry if that's teaching you to suck eggs, but it's hard to tell how much you know from what you posted, so adding for completeness) :)

I don’t seem to be getting output at all, normally, if the IOS didn’t boot I would expect to be able to drop back in to Rom Monitor and re flash it.

I will try different baud rates, but I don’t hold much hope :(

That was one of the reasons I needed to do a reset on the router unfortunately, otherwise I would have used the method stated above :)

Thanks

Damn :(

I hope that it's just changing the baud speed, otherwise I've know idea...

I broke one of our core 6500's earlier in the year by erasing the image on the supervisor and then the new image didn't take properly. I ended up dropping it into another 6500 with a supervisor to get a working image copied over, was not a happy moment!

I dont have a spare 877 here to try that method. Ill have to get another one at some point or sign up for a smartnet for it.

On a different note, Does the 877 top out on ADSL2+? As i had read a few mixed reviews.

You mean in terms of throughput? I don't know but it's probably marginal (ie, no on paper but close enough not to matter in reality) would be my guess, depending if you're doing anything even remotely advanced on it. The lowest end kit I tested was a 1841 and that topped out at about 35/40Mbps for reliable throughput - and that's a higher end device by a fair margin.

Surely this depends on if its an 877m or an 877. Given the 877 is Annex-A, then no, it won't max out an ADSL2+ connection.

I've just passed that on to a Cisco engineer, I'll post back when I find out whether that's just maximum packet throughput @ 64bytes, or whether that's maximum bandwidth throughput.
I would assume the former.

It is performance with a pathetic packet size. Changing the size to something normal increases the throughput significantly
