Cisco adsl vs Draytek

Hi All,

I've been looking at upgrading my ZyXel router - purely because it is very limited in the number of custom ports you can define (only 10) and the number of port forwarding rules you can have (10). I've had a look at the CISCO 857W which I quite like, however, do you have to pay a subscription to download IOS updates? If so, is it a lot?

I've looked at some top end Draytek routers, but they, however, seem to only allow you to define limited number of custom services and nat rules. Why, then, are they so expensive compared to D-link, Linksys, etc?

The cisco will be the best but a lot harder to configure and you do have to pay for an account to download software.

I had a draytek and didnt like it, the firewall section was flakey then running a lot of connections, also a lot of the "value added features" that you pay the extra money for didnt work much if any better than a netgear or linksys. Examples would be the VPN software which at the time didnt perform well with encyption enabled, and the poor SNMP support.

i have 877 my self not masiv difrence i build

It's unlikely.

My 877's been stable, but if you don't know what you're doing it might not be the best choice you ever make.

We use draytek 2800vg's in work, infact 22 for our councillors and i really like them, they give no problems and easy to setup and configure for VPN etc. Now we use another draytek on our end to take in the SDSL connection and the VPN connections and we had a little trouble with the vpn, but a call to draytek fixed it and we haven't had any issue since then.

The model we use on the end is a 3100

Ok.

Are the cisco adsl routers generally pretty stable?

Rock solid. I have an 857w it has never crashed, I have never had to reset it at all.

I have had it for over 6 months now, you pay a premium for the kit but you get what you pay for in my opinion.

I did buy a SmartNet account too, I think it was £48 for the year including IOS updates and next day onsite engineer cover/hardware replacement.

I've used a bog standard Draytek 2600 for a few years for home broadband and it has been solid in all that time. Has never crashed or over heated :)

yeah my 2600 was a dream, never went wrong, ran for months at a time.

"upgraded" to some Dlink rubbish that has wireless, but needs resetting at least once every 24hours.

the suck.
