Does a Cisco Aironet 1131AG wireless access point need any specialist hardware to work? A mate is offering me one for £50, but I don't know if it will work on my home network. I understand it will involve some setup, but will it only work in an enterprise environment etc?

Thanks

It depends. Is it an LAP or an AP model?

If its an LAP then it will be running a lightweight version of AireOS as its software platform, and will need a central wireless LAN controller (such as a 4402) in order to function.

If its just an AP then it will be fine as a standalone access point, requiring nothing else (other than a little knowledge of Cisco kit) to set up and run.

You can convert a LAP to an AP (lightweight to autonomous) but you'd need to source a functioning IOS for the 1131AG to flash it with.

Yeah, the model number on the sticker will either have LAP or AP in it.

AIR-LAP1131AG-E-K9 - Lightweight, AireOS based, needs WLAN controller.
AIR-AP1131AG-E-K9 - Autonomous, IOS based.

As mentioned above, you can convert one to the other, it's a fairly easy process and AFAIK the images are free downloads for registered users on Cisco.com

Do you need a maintenance contract to download the images, or can anyone register at cisco.com and download the images?

Cheers

Yes... go register for an account, fairly sure the last time I downloaded them they were accessible without a smartnet contract.

Excellent, I've just registered at Cisco and it seems easy enough. There are two latest releases in the IOS Software section, "12.4.21a-JA1(ED)" and "12.4.10b-JDA3(GD)" - whats the difference?
