I purchased a cisco 2600 from ebay and dont have a console cable to telnet in. Can you configure via the ethernet port somehow?

If the router has not been configured at all then the ethernet port will not have been set up, and thus will be down. Once you sort out the initial configuration through the console port from that point on you can connect through the ethernet port. So if you don't have a console cable, your out of luck.

I can post you a console cable if you like, however if you have any serial cable and ethernet cable that you don't mind cutting up, you could make one in 30 seconds.

Ah... i just purchased one for £2.50. i know i come across these at work sometimes, loads in the comms rooms i work in. But seeing as its important and i am no where near any of these places in the next week or so i needed one asap. No serial cables too.

If you know the pinouts and you have solid core cat5 you dont even need a serial cable, can just push the bare ends straight into your serial port!

The sooner they put USB on the back of these the better.

I have had situations where the laptop I was given to configure routers/switches didn't have a serial port!!

That required me finding an ancient Dell and using that.

Or just use a USB-Serial adapter like most normal people would do?

I certainly keep one attached to my console cable at all times.

I bought a belkin one and the damn thing doesnt work, so back to square one

One of my cisco routers (2800 IIRC) has a USB port on the front, but no idea what it's for!

I use a Belkin one with out any problems. :)

P/N F5U257?

However, from what i have read about the serial to USB connectors some don't support the full range of commands etc..

We've seen some serial/USB widgets not work when talking to PBX boxes. The Siemens programming software seems okay but other kit is very fussy and likes a proper serial port.

I've got a great usb to serial adaptor - can't remember the brand though. I keep a console cable attached to it all the time.

You can use the USB on a router for loading new images, and backing up / installing config - love it on the new routers, can be a bit picky on USB sticks though....

Iv got a 1700 at home to play about with, havnt started on it yet as I need to sort my network out. It has a 32mb flash card and two empty wic slots
