Hi Guys,
Got my first Cisco Lab to try and gain an understanding of CCNA and maybe eventually do my exam!!

The kit includes the following

2500 series x2
1600 series x2
Pix 501 x1

I also have a Cisco 877 ADSL router

I am going to set this all up in my computer room with a small server. What do you think my next step should be or what way should i set this up.

Also is there any good websites that i can use?

Hey,

I did CCNA during my A-levels about 3 years ago. We had several 2600 and 1600 series routers, with a few switches (can't remember what they were exactly). I guess you want to set them up so that you have easy access to the front and backs because you will be plugging cables in and out on a regular basis if you are doing all the practical labs. Also you will need quite a few cables too, I forget which ones you need. I think it is straight through cabling you need as the Cisco devices normally do the cross over automatically.

I think in CCNA2 there is a practical where you get to make yourself some Ethernet cabling so you need a crimper and some spare cabling.

Sorry if the above advice is useless :p

Can't think of any sites I used for help at the time, I would just ask my instructor! But most of the labs I did were fairly straight forward and the material was very good at explaining things.

Yeah ive done some cisco, never finnished coz i pritty much told the teacher where to stuff it and walked out because he was an arrogant **** who didn't know anything.

But anyway, yeah you will awnt to make sure you are good at making thoughs cables. O and dont stick your finger in the crimper, the only way to get it out is to follow through with the crimper. I dare say that may hurt :P

It depends on your budget but i would definately recommend a 2509 / 2511 Router to use as an access server. If you've got more than 4 or 5 devices, swapping the console cable over each time soon gets annoying.

I'd definately recommend the CBT Nugget video's by Jeremy Cioara and also the Train Signal ones by Chris Bryant. Chris Bryant also sells a training kit for about $60 i think. if you google it i'm sure you'll find it. It appears VERY CHEESY when you read through the webpage but if you read his study guide thoroughly you'd have to try very hard to fail. You also get access to a private forum in which he will answer any questions you have. You also get invited to various CCNA webinars etc. :)

As mentioned irp70 on ebay sells everything you could need.

You might want to grab a copy of Todd Lammle's Sybex 640-802 book too, some of the material is quite dry but he keeps it interesting. The Cisco Press books by Wendell Odom are also very handy, they include the Boson Simulator too which is good practice for the exam :)

Some great info in here guys thanks very much for everything.

Is it a good idea to setup a few different machines to the switches/routers to test everything?

You want to make your lab as userble as possible, so yeah connect everything and anything up to recreate as many sinarios as possible.
