Just so you guys understand I have no idea about cisco eqiupment what so ever... the reason in which I have brought some for my CCNA studies.

Today I recieved my first router a 3640 with no modular. I found one on ebay which is a WIC-1T NM-4A/S but not sure if I should buy it, as I am not sure if it's compatible with the follow equipment I have also purchased...

1 x 1841 with 2x WIC 1T modules
2 x (a) 2621XM with 1 x WIC 1B S/T and 1 x WIC 1T module
(b) 2621XM Router with 1 x WIC 2T and 1 x WIC 1T module

If going by the T in those modules it looks fine to buy, but will everything work together?
Will I also need more then one WIC 1T to be able to route?

Thanks in advance.

The 3640 is compatible with the nm-4a/s.

The WIC-2T uses different cables than the WIC-1T/nm-4a/s.

Take a look at gns3, wouldn't need to figure this all out. I would give a better answer in more detail but 26 hours of networking in two days has exhausted me... But hmm ASR9922, some nice looking kit.

Thanks for the info. but I learn better hands on, so getting someone to switch the cables, unplug them etc for troubleshooting will be better for me then just applying it in my head. What would you recommend for a module for the 3640?

Holy fast ethernet ports! - That is one monstrous looking beast!

OP, you going straight for the CCNA? - I'm going CCENT > CCNA route.

ICND1+ICND2...

I think i will be going the 2 exam route, my first thoughts was why do 2 when i could do just the 1, but i think breaking it up is a smarter choice.

When I had my home lab I just used all the same modules... So the WIC-1Ts and the NM-4A/S as they all use the same cable types..

Going to try and push to get the exams done before September or face the new harder exams after?

Thats what my question was related to, (may not have appeared that way) the cabling and the modules and if they where compatible to work together.

I hope to pass before september, but it all depends if I get my ass into gear and get a move on. I did my comptia A+ in 10 days, and my N+ (althrough i didn't take this exam due to saving money) in 12 days. So I know if I get my head in the right place it shouldn't be a problem to complete before sept.

What about yourself?

Nice looking unit for sure, especially with a few 100GB linecards in :) the amount of hassle getting them into the building though...!

Yup they are all compatible, quick google search proves it :)

Good luck! Just remember N/A+ aren't anything like the Cisco exams, especially if you have to take the new CCNA!
Trying to find the time to finish of my CCNP...

Do you know the differences between the current and new CCNA exam? Is there a place to check it out. Being lazy here I should just jump on to cisco website and have look.

How much harder is the CCNP compared to the CCNA exam, say on a scale of 10?

My advice... as always (and yes I need to learn to take my own advise sometimes) is to do it, Your never find the time while looking for it... only by doing :) best of luck

oh and if you dont mind, how much information do I need for the CCNA exam regarding IEEE standards? Do I need to remember 1000Base-T (IEEE 802.3ab) Cat 5, UTP, up to 100 meters long and up to 1Gbps and so on.

If I do then I best plan time to refresh on all the standards and cables.

Can't really say how much harder I think it is really, I didn't find the switch exam too bad.
Time is hard to find when your working 12 hours a day and then come home and are way too tired ;) Going to need to do some early mornings!

It's good to have an understanding of the cables and know the main ones. Your not going to have many questions on them though.
