...without console cable.

. Is this possible?

If not how much generally are they worth? I.e will a console cable cost more than the units worth.

Console cables are about £2 from the bay. if you have the bits around you can make them but just get one form there for the effort

Don't think 501s are worth much these days - maybe £50?

They might be OK for learning but the lack of throughput and features can be a problem compared to a modern ASA or similar.

When you say £2, is that just for a RJ45 to serial connector cable? Since most PCs these days don't have a serial port, how much does it cost to get one that goes to USB?

Aye a proper console cable is about 2 squid. I'm not sure on an adapter, I grabbed mine from a high street retailer and got totally ripped off, probably aren't too bad from the bay

Edit - There's also a difference in the quality. mines a Nikai or something, I don't use it really so I don't know what's a good brand though

I don't want to use it or learn on it. I want to wipe the unit prior to selling it.
