Just a quick question. I am setting up a cisco 3550 switch for one of our remote sites. The first port on the switch will be connected to a router on the site. The Switchport mode is showing up as follows on interface fa0/1

"Switchport mode dynamic desirable"

will this cause any issues?

It means whatever you plug into it will 'just work'

Whether that be a PC or another switch for trunking.

Providing the other end is configured correctly. Personally I despise these settings as they cause more trouble than their worth, if a port is a trunk port I want it to predictably stay a trunk port not randomly change depending on what it *thinks* is plugged in.

Yeah. In particular key connections (switch to switch, switch to router, switch to server) i like to set as much as i can to a manual setting (speed, duplex, trunking, portfast, etc)

Indeed as BRS and oddjob say, if you want to do something, do it manually. It takes out most chances of an error unless you put it there yourself

I would manually set it to switchport mode static just to make sure it doesn't mess itslef around and do the speed and duplex to full and 100/1000 just so you know it wont negoiate to something stupid
