I've heard of people saying they used services (I'm guessing some form of solicitors) to help with applying for visas.

Has anyone here used such a thing or could recommend one?

Long version:

I'm trying to see if I can get my son who is nearly 5 and Irish passport. My mother(so my son's grandmother) is Irish and was born in Ireland, I am also an Irish citizen and have and Irish passport but I was NOT born in Ireland.

Looking at the website, it looks like my son would be eligible to become and Irish citizen, but looks like before you can do that, you need to apply to be on the Foreign Births Register.

Looking through the website, how you go about doing this looks really quite complex, to the point where unless it was really a lot of money, I'd be tempted to get some paid professional help.

I did the FBR for our son (Grandmother born in Ireland, mother automatically an Irish citizen) and it was easy enough really, as long as you've got all the documents. The embassy in London contacts you soon enough if they need more info.

Was this done recently?

About 2019 IIRC. The FBR form tells you all the docs you need, birth certificates for the grandmother, mother, son, marriage certs, death certs (if needed..) basic stuff like that. Send it all off to the embassy special/recorded delivery and they sort it out. No idea on timescales now though.
