Hi people.

Could someone help me narrow down what this possibly might be.

Partners 51 plate Saxo, has just started to make a knocking sound, it sounds like its front the the drivers front area, the knocking ticking get louds faster and louder when more gas is applied.

If the clutch is engaged the noise will go away completely. It does not make the sound if the car is out of gear.

My guess is that this may be gearbox related. Initially I thought this might be a pulley but it would probably still do it when idling if this was the case.

Would anyone will willing to hep confirm what I believe, and how much is it likely to set us back? Any help is appreciated.

Not sure of the setup on the Saxo but this sounds like it could be driveshaft / inner cv joint related. If it is then the reason you can only hear it when in gear is that there is no.driving force to the shaft and wheels otherwise, hence nothing to knock.

Have it checked out, IF (and its a big if given I don't know much about the car or fault) this is the problem it wont be terribly expensive to sort, 100 quid or so

if it helps i also noticed its worse when turning, did a little bit of futher googling, and driveshaft CV joint problems are a symptom of this - so i think its leaning towards this.

Although the clutch is quite high, car has 72K on the clock. So is it likely the joints may need replacing at this mileage.
