Newcastle recently became one of the first cities to start having full fibre infrastructure installed and my area was one of the first to get it. I've just had it installed to the house today, a fibre cable from the telephone pole in the back lane to the eaves and then ran down the wall and into the house. Small fibre modem mounted internally and network cable to router. All done in about an hour and this is the result.



Speed should improve over the next week but coming from a 60 Mbps connection I'm happy with that so far. £40.00 a month from Zen.

What do people need those sort of speeds for though?

I download hundreds of gigs a month. The quicker I can do that the better.

Why would speed increase over the week? This is not adsl which needs to retrain?

Just reporting what the installer told me.

@PzR Slim how much are they charging you? My street is currently being cabled but it's not available yet, just wondering how it stacks up against Virgin

£40 a month. It was about 10 weeks from being cabled that it went live. If you sign up on the City Fibre website they will send an email as soon as it goes live. Was two weeks from ordering to having the install done.

Cheaper than virgin for sure! Just counting down the days until they'll let me switch!
