Civ 4 multiplayer?

Does anyone still play Civ 4? I've dusted off the CD and am thinking of giving it a go online with my bro. Haven't actually played it before (played Civ 2 in the old days but never installed civ 4!) but think it could be fun to play for a while each day on a massive campaign with AIs

Does anyone still play this or have any good strategies? What's the online play like?

Me, markopolo, theotheroption and nieldo are doing a game right now, it just doesn't really progress much as mainly marko is a in a bad situation . And it's hard to get all of us online at the same time due to work etc...


But I'm always up for a game. Just msn/steam (steamid = snovvdog)/xfire me.

I've added you to steam! May take you up on the offer! Don't have a steam version but assume hamachi is the best option? How does it work if one person dies and the others want to continue? Do all people need to join the game for it to continue, or can two people play if the third can't be bothered anymore and are they then taken over by the AI?

What do gold and silver mines actually do? As far as I can see they don't increase the income at all but increase happiness and that's it?

Just playing a practice game at the moment and have 3 gold mines and 2 silver mines next to my towns but they don't seem to do anything. Iron mines let you build troops, etc but I would have thought gold would give you gold coins or something but I dont think they do?

1: Yes they do:

A plains gold tile usually produces 2 hammers and 1 commerce, add a gold mine and it's 3 hammer and 7 commerce for that tile. Likewise for silver but 6 or 5 commerce instead of 7...

OK confused now! I understand the rest so thanks for that, but what does 7 commerce mean? Does this mean 6 gold pieces per turn? I have to be honest and say I don't understand what the hammer and gold icons mean! I thought the hammer meant stone or something. Oops.
