Do i buy it? or wait for V

after my previous post wondering about an RPG to buy i've decided what i really want is any modern big game that will keep me busy and involved for a long time. any other suggestions are much appreciated. (i also want a game that looks very pretty.. which is a bit silly of me but oh well)

Civ 4 isn't an RPG is it? It's a turn based strategy.

If that's what you want, personally, I think it's pants. After the first game, you start to think "what's the point?". Even after automating all the workers etc, I found it a bit repetitive. I am probably missing some hidden treasure in the game. If anyone can point me to it - please do:)

Civ4 + Beyond the Sword is the best 'civ' style game around. Top stuff, and can be picked up for a bargain as well.

:(

I'm playing through it for the first time right now. I love it, great game. I hope I don't start to feel like that.

You shouldn't do. I've been playing it since Civ 2 and don't feel like that.

Also to the OP just get IV I don't think V is out for a fair bit and also you can get the IV collection pack cheap enough with the 2 add ons.

Good good :)

Is anyone willing to post up a few tips for playing civ? I've got the rough hang of it but it seems like such a deep game. I know I'm missing loads. Sorry for the slight OT.

OP: Just buy civ iv dude :)

Check the guide out above (and the beginner sticky's on the forums) - Even being a Civ2/Civ3 fanatic theres still things I am learning in this one.

Cheers dude. I was looking to avoid guides larger than some of my college text books but I guess that's the nature of the game.

Civ 4 on it's own must be worth a dabble for ten quid. It's not exactly a graphical tour de force, but she's no minger either. If Civ gets its hooks in to you it should keep you occupied/obsessed for a good while. And I think we'll be waiting for CIV 5 for a while. :(

Horses for courses really. It's the same with all genres I suppose. But at least you gave it a go.

I've actually played very little this year.

I think I have actually civved myself out, for the first time in 11 years.

I keep trying to start a game, but am getting to that whats the point stage.

(and I do know how to play, normally marathon/monarch)

:(

Think my civ days are over.

The only problem with Civ4 (that i find anyway) is unless you have a good couple of hours to get your teeth into it, it isnt worthwhile. I'm finding I simply dont have 2 hours completely spare to give it the time it deserves, trying to play it for 30 mins here and there puts you off and progress is slow and interupted.

I think playing like that is better, sometimes if you have to much time you end up just clicking away.

At least if you have breaks, you can think your strategy better.

After reading Sully's guide, I fired it up again on the weekend, and gave it another go, this time micromanaging more and... nope it just didn't work for me. There I was trying to decide whether my worker should build a road or dig a mine, when I cam to the conclusion that I didn't give a toss, and that automate worker button eventually got clicked :(.

Now I'm not normally that inpatient - the game just doesn't grab me.

To the OP, if you're looking for a very different, very engaging strategy, where you can micromanage to your hearts content should you wish, look no further than Hearts of Iron - Doomsday. It ain't pretty I'm afraid, and like Civ 4, needs a bit of research to appreciate the hidden complexity. In fact, the best scenario is playing Germany from 1936 and building up the economy and war machine for the big showdown in 1939!
