Hello guys and gals!

Might be a silly question but if you never played Civ4 before (I have played Civ I and II, plus a bit of III before), should you recommend that I start with just Civ4 on itself, or should I install both the Warlords and Beyond the Sword expansion packs before playing it?

And do you have any tips in regards to Civ4 overall?

Cheers
Tom

Naw - install the lot then play Beyond the Sword...corporations rule!

Possible one of the best games ever made, althought I have trouble on anything higher than Noble difficulty...

To Beyond the Sword AS FAST AS POSSIBLE!

Civ4 is probably the only game iv pre-ordered in the last 10 years (ignoring spore but thats only as i wanted the extra art work thing as im supremaly cool) and iv played it almost every day for nearly 3 years!

I still cant regularly beat prince (the comp cheats...) but noble is the respectable place to be at.

As for the game, which civ did you most like? as its like none of them for strategies to win and the best civ in 3 (incans) is still pretty good in 4 but you'll find competing theories of whos the best. I personally find the dutch to be the best, but if you get regularly beaten as someone try playing as them.....

Anyway final word of advice from the game "snacks are good in moderation" and be prepared to lose a lot of your life... :D

God I got this game last year and I still can't work out what happened to 3+ weeks of my life after that.:p

Last time I played it I decided to play one of the biggest map, I got to about 1850 or so and the game decided to crash due to a memory shortage (I assume). Decided to leave it until I get 4GBs of RAM.:o

Another vote for playing with all the expansions. They had some extra features like others have mentioned but it's still the same core game if that makes any sense. If you're getting used to all the other new features vs eg Civ 3 (religion etc) you may as well get to understand corporations at the same time.

Can generally win every time on prince mode myself, but it requires playing in a slightly less fun manner to compensate for the computer cheating. Would recommend noble as a starting point if you're familiar with the prequels.

Install civ4 and BTS, forget warlords it doesn't have anything bts doesn't except a few scenario's...

And start playing bts...

Love CIV4, played it solidly for several weeks after its day of release and then it slowly wore off. I go back to it every now and again but I've also never bothered with any of the expansions.... what makes BTS so good?

I got this game when it first come out, and i'm still trying to figure out how to play it properly :P my brain can't handle it

Maybe im just thick

what makes BTS so good?

New features of course, it's still the same game just much more featured and refined, newer too.

You're asking the same as:

''What's the difference between a 2004 mondy Lx and 2007 Ghia X with leather etc?''

The Ghia is obviously better as it has loads of extra features as is a few trim levels higher and newer...

You get more units, more civs, more maps, more techs, more wonders, more special people, more buildings, corporations, random events, quests, small gfx upgrade, and many many great mods for it ( which need bts to work)...

I cross between Incan (I think that's the Organized / Financial) and Roman (again not sure if that's them but it's organized / expansive i think.)

So the general idea is to install the expansion BtS only and then start playing.. does Warlords not give anything to the game expect a few more scenarios?

Also, will 2GB be enough?
*snip*

Just don't want it to crash on me when I am somewhere in the middle and have to start all over again!

Luckily I saved it about half an hour before it crashed, it doesn't help though as it just crashes at the same point everytime I restart the saved game. :p

Yeah 2gig should be fine (expect a little slow down on massive maps towards the end though)

Iused to play on half a gig back in the day (when i first got it) and it wasnt too bad (with winamp on too) but i say the playable minimum is a gig (especially ona single core pc)

Plays like a dram with 8gig and a e8200 now though :D

Oh yeah dont turn off the auto save!!! it saves every 5 turns and helps massivly if the game crashes (before or during saving) so you can go back 3 auto saves beforehand and get round the problem

A really great game, get Civ 4 and BtS, I think all the stuff from warlords is in BtS.

Great game, its always on my computer. For me its one of those games where you play it for a week or two none stop until I burn out on it.

The games can get interesting on the higher levels as you just cant stomp everyone and have to start relying on diplomacy, its very fun getting attacked by a better or equal civ and having a long drawn out war, when you win it feels like an achivement.

bought this game the other week, havnt really played it much recently as its so damn hard! i can only play on difficultys lower than noble but then i feel like im cheating! im probably just not smart enough :(
