Civilization V £17.99

Civ V will be better in a year or two when its been patched up more and has some mods available.

Civ IV is fully complete with lots of mods, theres an Alpha Centauri conversion for it as well.

Any tips for where to build cities? Some squares it takes like 15 turns to build things and others like 14?

read the civlopedia on tile types
some make more food, some make more production.
You can modify the tiles with workers that increase these further.
Certain buildings modify it even further.
Deffo need to read a bit about all this before you try.

Also you should see a suggested site for cites like a little gold castle thingy.

You need production cities and gold cities. Bare in mind your capital should never be your production city because rail roads give a 50% bonus to other cities (can be done through harbours too). however your main city will be your main production till industrial age likely.

At the start of the game your settling of cities is largely dependent on luxury resources. You must expand to where they are. You can't build any sort of empire without at least 4/5 of them or you will need to get them from city states, which proves expensive.

try build next to rivers if you can. They give +1 gold on the river tiles and allow you to build water mill etc.

When placing a city you must balance food and production and consider the 3 tile radius. It is not always a good idea to build right next to the resource you need. Sometimes it's better to consider that the resource you want will be encompassed in the 3 tile radius eventually. This is of course very situational. Things like fish for instance should be considered late game bonus's as generally water tiles are useless and thus you should try to not build on the coast if possible.

Trade posts are late game winners. If you can build a city surrounded by forest and if possible a river to boot it will lead to and extreamly good gold city. By that I mean yoiu can cut down the forests to get +2 food +2 gold with a trade post or leave the forest and build a trade post on it to get +1 production +2 gold +1 food. Sharing this out gives a good ratio of each. Further more if near a river you will be able to build farms on that to give +4 food +1 gold later in the game. You will need these types of cities to support large armies and/or upgrade armies.

Hope thats some good starters. personaly I try to keep between 5-7 owned cities, the rest are pupets. Puppets are gold cities so surround them with farms and trade posts.
