Hiya peeps,

Work given me a nice budget for training and im looking at improving my skills in web design/planning.

One of the courses ive considered is the CIW Master Designer for web design, anyone done it, familiar with it and more importantly is the qualification at the end worth the effort ?

Thanks :D

Professionally the qualification is worth little to nothing, it seems to be one of the certifications that was still-born. Despite it's early successes it has never acheived mainstream recognition, to be honest you will struggle to find any employers who have heard of it - let alone recognise it. In webdesign an excellent portfolio will have a far greater impact than any qualification.

On a personal level, and if your company is going to be paying for it, I would say it can be useful. The aspects it covers are quite interesting and the programming courses, while basic, can be a good starting point.

If you do decide to go ahead with make sure you get the latest versions of all the books, otherwise you'll find numerous references to NetScape, LiveScript and a whole host of other information that hasn't been relevant for years.

I used the CIW Advanced web design course to gain a few credits during my degree. Pass mark was pretty high, around 83% if I remember correctly.

Passed with around 88% and never really thought anything more about the certification to be honest. Like the post above mentions it's not really taken off and I certainly don't go flashing it about.
