Driving on the motorway this morning and heard a loud smack on the windscreen from a stone or something. couldn't see anything as it was dark but when i got to work noticed a thin crack of about 7 inches on the bottom drivers side of the windscreen
Now its past the point of Gavin and his super resin being able to help so it will have to be a new windscreen on my ST220.
Now what i cant get a straight answer for is How it affects future insurance quotes as i have seen on various sites that it still needs to be declared to any new insurance company as its still technically "a claim".
I am a month away from getting my 5 yrs No claims which i can protect when i take out my new policy in march. Admiral who i am with give me windscreen cover but there will probably be a £75 excess charge for windscreen replacement.
Now should i just pay out for new windscreen myself around £150 or go through insurance? as according to various sites when i come to do renewal quotes next month it would need to be declared "as a claim" even though its the windscreen! And if i dont declare it and they find out it will void whatever new policy i take out and could affect the price of the quotes which i dont want to happen as i already get bent over with being in a bad area.

Makes no difference to your no claims with admiral.

The only ones it affects are AXA and SwiftCover who will freeze your no claims for the year, ie. nothing gained or lost for that year

yes i have read that on there site but its also states that its technically a Claim even though the windscreen cover is part of the policy.
As i will most likely be changing company's in March i will have to declare a windscreen replacement as a former claim if i go through my insurance which can supposedly affect the price i will get quoted for cover by another company.I already pay 1.1k so shall i just avoid my insurance and pay it myself? so i dont have to declare a claim come quotes time.?

From looking round more on money super market etc u now have to declare a windscreen replacement like you do a crash or theft :eek:under the previous claims section when comparing the meerkat otherwise the policy can be voided if u don't state u previously claimed for a windscreen. Don't fancy my insurance quotes in March going up over something so stupid so looks like I'll have to bite the bullit and pay out my own pocket for a Mondeo heated windscreen.
Seems like another one of them insurance loopholes. I bet 90% of people who claim for glass repair never put it down as a previous claim when changing policy's.

Ultimately though, the quote engines look at more than "do they have any claims" and so any windscreen claims will result in a marginal difference, particularly as the total cost is likely to be £200. It's normally treated as a separate cover from an NCB perspective, but of course you have to declare any claims as it's a material fact! Someone with a lot of windscreen claims is more likely to follow other vehicles too closely and can be a good indicator of driving style and thus the likelihood of a "proper" claim.

I had a window claim on my insurance last year, when I came to review it was on my proof of NCB I submitted to my new insurers but it didn't effect my policy or my no claims and my renewal price from the old/new company.

The old company was Admiral, the new was Zurich.

Even if it went up it will go up is far less than the screen will cost even over 5 years anyway if it did go up.

Do some quotes with next doors address birthday and a different name to get the picture for yourself and your own circumstances.

Thanks for the info. I'll get some quotes tommorow. If I can get it done for £150 I'll just pay it save messing but if it's more then I'll pay the £75 excess through the insurance and have to declare it next month come quote time.
Just don't wanna have to add that on the claims section as I already pay silly amounts of money were I live.

NCD is not to be confused with loading your premium on renewal.

Inscos assure their policyholders that making a claim (there is no other word for indemnifying loss BTW) will not affect NCD. This has been under a lot of scrutiny as some inscos have stated that if their nominated repairer is not used, it can/will affect NCD. Even Autoglass are no longer 'approved' for some inscos and despite carrying out the work have subsequently found out that the respective insco are not paying the full amount, so they've gone back to the policyholder for the balance.

There was a big debate about this very subject on another forum and 'someone' from the insurance industry was asked if making a windscreen claim would have any bearing on renewal. The question was not answered. Go figure.

Forcing you to use the approved windscreen supplier is horrible. I cannot rememebr who I was with at the time, but either I had to use their supplier or if I went anywhere else they would only pay £50 towards the replacement.
I managed to lose a rear windscreen and had to drive around with plastic and tape for almost a month - My local Skoda main dealers said they could get me a screen in about a week, but it would be considerably more than £50.

I have bad luck with screens - on my current Octy vRS I've had 4 screens in as many years - 3 front and 1 rear. I had to pay for the latest one out of my own pocket as insurance said they would reduce my NCB if I claimed yet another screen!

But would it be considerably more than £125? You would have £75 excess anyway, so the insurance company is suggesting that they are only wiiling to pay £125 to get the window done.

It's their contribution.

This is how they become 'approved', by offering a low average invoice price deal. On the flipside of this, the 'approved' repairer then sources the cheapest glass/parts available.

Cheapest glass? Surely it's the same glass as sourced by an OEM.

The last 2 times I've had a windscreen replaced it's been via Autoglass (at least they turned up to do the job as authorised company by the insurer). Both times the glass has been given a lifetime warranty and the glass guy confirmed it's the same glass used by manufacturer, just not badged in teh corner with their logo..

I'd have thought the glass/parts would not be the cheapest available as they stand less of a chance of lasting a full lifetime and so would need a free callout and more cost to fix down the line.

Aye but do note that cover is for as long as you own the vehicle, which could be a lifetime I guess :p

AG's own site states they source the glass from OE sources and if they can't then from sources that make them to OE standard.

I'm well aware of who and what the warranty covers, as well as what glass they use and where it comes from ;)
