Actually being "homeless" generally isn't the greatest problem that homeless people have though... drug (mainly alcohol) dependency and mental issues are common.
agreed. there are some genuine cases where people have just 'gone wrong' somewhere, or have a mental disability of some kind. Thes people can, and should, be helped.
Its a pity they are outweighed by the scum - the ones who prey on them, forcing them at knifepoint to go to the post office, cash thier giro and then hand over the cash. Happens all the time. I have had to personally escort several of the guys from the hostel to the post office and back to avoid these situations.
Some of these people are so nice, really decent people - thier lives have just gone terribly wrong and they are often so confused and devoid of hope. Seriously- I have worked with ex CEOs, soldiers, Fathers who have lost their wife and children, teachers- you name it.
All they need is someone to say 'We understand, sometimes it happens. Lets get you back on your feet' and they will open up and engage. NOTHING has ever been more rewarding than working with these people for me. I have a small collection of letters from people who i have worked with to some degree or another (I played a ridiculous amount of pool!). I never got into the serious mental illness side of things, but i used to run a bicycle repair workshop, and help with outings, allotment projects and the like. Even just hanging out in the hostel and being there as a friend.
Its a shame that the decent type of 'homeless' seems so rare, and that the rest of them are the worst of the worst, and if karma truely exists, then they are exactly where they deserve to be.
