Clamping the homeless?

Hostels is probably the wrong word. Homeless shelters would be more like it.

It entirely depends on your area as to what facilities are available. some places have none, some have loads.
Easiest way to find that sort of thing is ask at the local big issue office, as they would be in the loop, so to speak. Nearly all of my experience in these circles is from exeter, and that was three or so years ago now, so the funding/projects may have changed.

Otherwise the local CAB would likely be able to help.

Note- these facilities are generally for the 'street homeless' (no, not hoodies, baggy trousers and oversized jewellery :p ), and wouldn't have access to such things as overdrafts, or bank accounts in general.

i didn't do any casework (you need the relevent qualifications for that), so i dont know the ins and outs of who is eligible for what.

However, as a rule all of this stuff is means tested at some level.

Me, mum and my sisters were homeless for a while and had to pay for B&Bs while the council sorted a house for us.

From what I've seen, the shelters and so on are usually aimed squarely at the completely destitute.

The problem is the council is incredibly fussy about what they will pay for, and take 2 months to cough up...never mind the impossibility of getting any private accommodation paid for under the current climate.

/\/\ Oh hell yes!

Going through the council isn't always the best option.

After having a think about it, i realised a lot of the shelters will be run by charitable organisations who are not funded or controlled by the local authority.

I looked one of them up (Emmaus) - limited space, and they require you to claim housing benefit, and work for them as well (in return you get a few basics and a small weekly payment of around £30). The nearest one to me is about 20 miles away and currently fully occupied.
