Having just listened to the new Opeth live album "The Roundhouse Tapes", it's just reminded me how much i hate people clapping in a songs quiet points or whatever at a gig, i don't mean applause, but you know, that rhythmic clap...

It just annoys me, i wanna listen to the song, not you **** clapping! :(

If the band wanted clapping on their songs, they would have them added in the fricking studio.

Im all for crowd interaction, but generally just a bit of banter in between songs and applause...

Anyway.. anyone else feel this way, or am i alone in my Victor Meldrew-esque thoughts? ;)

It generally happens because one of the band members is spurring the crowd onto doing it.

Anyway, I was at that event and as far as we were concerned it was just another gig. A lot of people didn't realise it was being recorded until Mikael mentioned it.

Yeah i know band members spur it on, but sometimes, ya know, i just wish it didnt happen, but im a fussy old git it seems :P

Other than that, the CD is awesome though, i saw them at the Portsmouth Pyramids, London Mean Fiddler and The Forum, on support of Ghost Reveries, damn good gigs all of them :)

Edit: Also, there can be times when its good to clap, but when its crowd initiated and not by the band, its fair to say, its generally poorly timed, and pants, imo :)

I'm with you on this one but there are two things that are worse -

1) - When the singer decides to do shoutbacks with the audience
2) - Drum solos

Exactly why I will not go to cimema again, recently went to see Saw4

Mobiles going off, people talking & grown men making stupid laughing sounds in the gory scenes, really felt like standing up & telling everyone to stfu & let me try & watch the film.

Crowd Surfing......

hate it, maybe its because I've never tried it?

I've been in some harsh mosh pits and been bruised/cut a fair bit but there's something I find about getting kicked in the back of the head quite ******* annoying.

Unless requested by the band (as noted above), yes it's annoying. But not as annoying as the importation of that vile American custom of waving lighters around during slow songs.

I'll tell you what's the most annoying thing ever.....ENCORES!

Why, FFS?

I can understand in the old days the band would be overwhelmed by the reaction and the gig organisers would be like "You'd better go back on or there'll be a riot".

But nowadays? Everything is all pre-planned. I even do the same at my gigs. All my encore songs are accounted for beforehand so I don't run out of steam.

Why then don't they scrap encores completely and just finish on the most well-known song?

Crowd Surfing......
I once had to crowd surf at download festival I was stuck in the middle of the big crowd at the main stage, couldn't breathe and was struggling to make my way to the back so someone just threw me up.

I hate out of time clapping, as soon as the drum beat kicks back in and you start hearing the claps fade away due to them being out of time.

I get annoyed when you pay money to hear a group and find yourself in amongst a crowd of people who know all the words.

SHUT UP FFS!!

Especially nowadays because bands play so long.
If I go back to the 60's lots of bands used to play on a bill and you were lucky to do 5 songs and an encore.
During the 70's a set lasted 1 hour and no longer.
It doesn't matter what band you went to see (Sabbath, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin etc) you got an hour and a couple of encores.
Nowadays bands go on and bore the life out of you so theres no need for an encore.

Your victor meldrew.#

The whole point of going to gigs is crowd interaction, which clapping is one part of it.

if you want a perfect song, get it on cd. Gigs are meant to be entertaining and interactive.

Nothing worse than a band just playing there songs.
