Ok so...

I'm doing a build this week and I have a few irks that I'd like to iron out, here goes.

The Aim

To have a gaming rig that can handle 1920x1080 across 3 displays in 3D.

I've more or less decided on the gtx 590 over 2 gtx 580's based on the 3 DVI-D ports, native on the 590 and also because 2 x 580's usually have DVI-I connections and I'm unsure whether these would suport the bank of Benq's in 3d surround mode. I considered the HD6990 but when I added in the cost of active adapters for the DisplayPort(s) it became unfeasible in comparison.

I currently have 1 x Benq XL2410T, 120hz LED monitor, purchased from the good folks here at OC. The intention is to purchase 2 more to fill-out my display requirement.

Is there a better GPU set-up than I have planned? I have read and re-read the technical forums and it's come back to costing and port usability.. ie. this dual-gpu card with the connections I need, the gtx 590, are better value than anything else on the market right now.

Am I right or is there something that I've missed?

Help me out you knowledegable lot.

im not sure of the number of active adapters you would need for a 6990 but only one would be needed for a 6950/70 crossfire setup, but if you want 3d then nvidia is your best route, my choice would be 570/580 sli, the 570 option is cheaper and the 580 option has better perfomance

So that would mean that DVI-I would happily support 120hz 3d gaming?

The 570 was an option but my issue lies with the 1.3gb of frame-buffer.. Some games are already pushing toward 1.5gb and I really dont want to waste £450 when for £100 more I get a better solution (will pay for itself over a longer PC-life is my rationale). That said, there has to be a price-ceiling somewhere I guess, and you may be right, perhaps I've overlooked the 570's too hastily.

I saw the EVGA 460 2Win (might have been the 480-apologies if I'm incorrect) and was tempted by the fact that this dual-GPU card has the 3 x DVI-D's that I'm looking for. It only has 1Gb ram per GPU though so frame buffer becomes the issue again... I've been tearing my hair out trying to solve this one.

Thanks OldGamer, I seriously appreciate your input and need more of it.

Do you have any revised thoughts?

i see where your coming from about the ram thats why most people will recomend ati for eyefinity and nvidia for 3d and to be honest i dont know anyone who games on three screens in 3d, i think for what your trying to do the 570s would still be my choice or push the boat out and get a pair of 580's, and 3 way sli is doable but sadly costly, the benchmarks ive seen for the 590 running 5760x1080 have not looked to bad so the ram cant be to much of a issue but what happens when you through 3d into the mix, its a tough call me thinks

I agree with your 590 observation - what the hell would happen with double the frames required for 3D! /boogle

Maybe the soltion then, is to downgrade slightly. I didnt mention my 'build' or else you would have discounted tri-sli... my bad

I'm buildiing an i5 2500k system this week which limits me to 2 x 16 slot pci-e slots. I'm aware that they will run in 8xlane mode with 2 cards but I havent come across any game yet that comes close to even using the 8 lanes fully. A single 2x gpu configuration does open the door to a quad sli config though. It's food for thought if nothing else.

As mentioned previously, my head feels like an over-cooked i5 at the moment.

Well after much deliberation, I finally made a decision.

I plumped for 2 x Gainward/Palit GTX 580 3Gb. This will hopefully solve my display conundrum.

I'll be putting a system-build video up shortly which I'll link in due course.

Many thanks for your input OG - let me know what you think of my solution.

The 580's should provide plenty of firepower, have you chosen any screens yet, ive seen the acer gd245hq in a 3 monitor setup and they looked awesome

I spent about 3 weeks balancing budget with specs before finally settling on the Benq Xl2410t. I took delivery of the first one last week and I incredibly impressed. Even normal usage in 120Hz is far superior to anything I've experienced before.

I'll be ordering 2 more after the system-build is completed and burned-in. I'm waiting on the processor and cooling kit to arrive. It's on a van circling Cardiff as I type this.

I'll check out the Acer's now.
