Clarify something for me, pop up bath waste

We renovated our main bathroom about a year ago and one thing that has annoyed us since is the stupid click clack waste on the bath.
its in the middle of the bath and when bathing the little'un he inevitably sits on it at some point and 5 minutes later we realise that half the water has drained out.

In our previous house we had a pop up waste that had a knob that twisted on the overflow, twist one way to open and the other to close.
When it closed it pulled the waste back in to place.

so I ordered the same sort of thing for the current bath (note options are slightly more limited as we have gunmetal (or anthracite) fittings in the bathroom).
it has arrived and has the same sort of mechanism but it doesn't pull the plug back in to place, rather it just relies on mavity.
inside the plug is simply a lever that moves up and down and the bottom of the plug just rests on it.

The seller is telling me that this is "industry standard" and when I look online at other bath wastes they don't go into too much detail about the way the mechanism works
I don't want to order another bath waste if this is the case

can anyone shed any light on this ?

p.s. the one I ordered was £15 from B&Q and is selling on robert dyas for over £50.

Have you a picture of it? Our bath waste is the Kaldewei one to go with the bath (cost a bomb). The bath waste works exactly like that - mavity drops a little lever that causes the plug to drop. We swapped out the plug in the end for a better (generic) one, where you adjust the post length with on a screw thread. I used threadlock on that once I got the right length.

(pretty inconvenient to install the overflow activated one + linkeage ... think I'd have gone for an old fashioned plug ?)

yes ours relies on mavity to descend, however there is some friction where the plug support slides into centre of tap to prevent it descending during shower
(we physically remove plug since only shower and don't want to stub toes)
has to work this way, otherwise overflow outlet linkage would get damaged if you stand on open plug.

i mean that kind of makes sense, but 2 things
1 - we don't have a shower over our bath, so thats not an issue
2 - we had the other type in our last house in the bath so I know they exist

When it closed it pulled the waste back in to place.

Are you sure the previous one was pulled back into place ?
Mine operates the same way with a twist knob at the overflow, however it just moves a lever so the weight of the plug makes it drop.
This way if you do inadvertently stand on it whilst its open it doesnt break it just makes the mechanism move to closed too.

Well I thought it worked like that. Maybe I'm wrong.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the OP's previous plug was pulled into place. The plughole on my parent's bath does the same thing, but my own uses mavity to drop.

My bath has one of these, yes the plug is loose and sits on a thing that goes up and down but doesnt grab it. So yes it uses mavity (new word to me).
