Classic Car Insurance

Doing a Google search for the term would suggest that a lot of insurers will allow you to qualify for "Classic car insurance" if its 10 years old or more.

However, I would guess that is a wee bit optimistic??!!

i'd say 25-30 years old

You can look at Footman James, they do excellent car insurance for classic cars

Apparently it can mean as little as 10 years old or over but generally coincides with those vehicles that are tax exempt.

The main difference is that they are insured for an agreed value and do not attract NCB ( again, apparently ).

Suppose it would depend who you insure with m8, maybe NCB can be applied?.

I haven't ever had a policy for a "classic", so cant confirm. Thats just what I read on a few classic owners sites and Google groups.

Car wise you cant go wrong with anything pre 1989 but as others have said it all depends on the company.

Most if not all insurers require you to be 21 or over and many require 25.

Classic insurance really comes in when you start doing serious engine swaps and mods as you can make some good deals.

I fulfill all of those criteria, yet am currently struggling to find a classic car insurer.

I'm 23, will be 24 when i need a classic policy although will have only held a full license 1 year.

Car is a 1983.

The car aint had an engine swap (yet :D) but its not totally standard either.

Any suggestions as to an insurer i can try?

Got to agree with you there. I wish people would stop looking for loopholes and compensation all the time. Its kind of ironic really as this is the exact thing that drives premiums up.

I saw an option for classic insurance the other day, I think it specified 15 years old and below 3k miles per year. Might have been privledge or direct line, applied for so many quotes I cant remember who exactly

Sounds like a lot of people these days are seeing 'Classic Insurance' as an opportunity for cheap 'Banger insurance'.

Main benefit of Classic Insurance is the agreed value thing, although you are generally limited to 3000 Miles a year and you dont get any NCB out of it.

I want (need) it as i'm currently only going to end up covering 1500 miles a year in that particular car, only done 700 miles in it in total so far, use a different car most of the time yet am paying 2 Grand TPFT for a car i just spent 4K on having restored and generally only drive when its sunny at weekends.

To say i would be a bit miffed if someone rear ended me would be an understatement.

And i do still need to insure another newer car on a normal policy.

I insured my last 1990 205GTI on classic insurance. Can't remember the website but I put it on limited miles of 6K a year. Valued at £1000. Declared DR10 (drink drive ban) and it came to £216 a year.

We are looking into getting another and will probably do the same.

i know some one who has an old escort rs turbo with full re-engine built bored out etc.. pumping about 250-300bhp, i think hes 20 if not 19 and hes got that on classic for about 1400.
