Picking up the latest edition of PC Gamer, gamers will find a free copy of the classic version of Colonization on the included DVD. The game has been especially prepared to run on Windows XP and Windows Vista, using a customized version of DOSBox, a popular DOS emulator that enables you to play older games. The first reports of how well this construction works are promising. Several of our members have posted that they have installed the game without problems and are playing without any issues at all.

I used to love the old game manuals - Excitedly reading them on the way back from the store on the bus, train or whatever else. Now you're lucky if you get a kay map and a ToS in them.

Nice one. Thanks for the info. My nipper enjoys these sorts of games, so I think I'll grab a copy of the magazine when I'm back in Blighty.

Going to install now (have a proper copy on CD hanging around somewhere)

Edit : We do not condone piracy ... your privateer sails past in the background waving and cheering as the Spanish Galleon goes down :p

Exactly. I'm still playing Age of Empires 2 on the LAN here at home and it beats anything around today, the old style strategy games rule. Bring them back!

Its typical really
There's a perfectly good Windows version about (Better in some regards), but yet they choose the easy way out with DosBox. All the Windows version needs to run on anything up to Vista is the WinG DLLs installing and a new installer.

downloaded from here and got it working but it keeps stopping/crashing after bout 10-15 turns. any ideas?

cheers

Havent had anything similiar though I did notice an improvement by setting the operation cycles to around 4000. I think one of the latter F keys changes it up and down, if you keep it in windowed mode it will tell you what the cycle number is in the title bar.

Also check your ingame sound settings, soundblaster pro worked well for me.

Can't say I liked the windowed version, all the parts were seperate. Fullscreen for me :)
