I think it's fantastic in films, as Williams and Zimmer show.
But for some reason I'm not often inclined to listen to it for its own sake.
That said, Grieg's Piano in A Minor is ... amazing.
I actually used to listen to classical music as a young child whilst reading Stephen King novels
It really enhanced the experience, and means I associate many classical pieces with people being horribly murdered 
But as that shows, I find classical works best as an accompaniment to something else, not on its own.
