I fix pcs for a living and generally never post here as i dont run into problems, this one however has me stumped so im wondering if anyone here can suggest anything.

Im fixing a celeron 2.4ghz TINY pc for a friend of the family and had to do a full reinstall... it had over 1700 virus/spyware files i kid you not!

Anyway ive gotten all the data off onto another pc and proceeded to do a clean install of xp home. Wiped the partition and such and was fine right upto the reboot and the first splash screen, the windows bars going across the screen. It moves normally for about 15 seconds then the lights flash on the keyboard as the mainboard polls the keyboard and WHAM... thats it. Hard lock and will go no further.

Ive tried new keyboards and disconnected everything else.... tried disabling everything i can in the bios, turned off power managent, tried assiging manual IRQ's the works. Nothing stops it from hanging. Ive tried a hard drive of my own as well... the same happens and its a knonws working drive.

Memory is tested ok as is all other tests that the usual disgnostic tools can detect ( pc-check etc etc ).

There literally is nothing else to try? anyone seen this before as i certainly havnt. Ive now tried several different versions of XP just to test it and all the same.

I was browsing this forum after hitting it up on a google search where my computer was having the same problem experienced by a number of other users especially in this thread.

I thought i might share with you all my method or "fix" for this problem. I am not entirely sure how i managed it but here it is anyway.

Background Info:

My computer originally was a Windows XP Pro build which i then proceeded to upgrade to SP2 through various patches and downloads. This all worked fine. I then got a virus and decided I'd do a complete wipe and reformat with a Windows XP Pro + SP2 cd. After reformatting fine, my computer would consistently freeze on the Boot Screen with the Blue dots running along the page underneath the "Windows XP" logo. After about 6 scrolls it would reach halfway and hang. When attempting Safe Mode it would freeze on a file called "MUP.sys" .

I surfed the web some more on another computer and found this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=885626

Scroll down to the "WORKAROUND" section. and Method 1: Use the Windows XP Recovery Console

i reached the end of the eighth step "8. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER. "

I rebooted the computer and decided i'd try my luck and suprisingly it booted up fine and i proceeded with my installation.
NB: It did hang at the beginning of the installation for about 5 mins. Patience people.Patience

So, in summary.

If you are having the same problem as i was try the following steps:

Method 1: Use the Windows XP Recovery Console
To use the Windows XP Recovery Console to start your computer, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk in the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD in the CD drive or the DVD drive, and then restart the computer.

For additional information about how to obtain and use Windows XP Setup disks, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
310994 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/) How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks
2. Click to select one or more of the options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive or the DVD drive if you are prompted to do this.
3. At the Setup screen, press R to start the Recovery Console.
4. Type the number of the Windows XP SP2 installation that caused your computer to stop responding. You must type this number even if only one installation appears.
5. Type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.
6. At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:

cd system32\drivers

7. At the command prompt, type ren update.sys update.sp2, and then press ENTER.
8. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER.
9. Reboot and continue with XP installation.

NB: It may HANG at the very beginning of XP installation. Patience.

And there you have it. My workaround for this very stupid problem. I hope it helps any of you out there with this problem. It was just my way around it. I do not guarantee it will work at all.

Good Luck and Good Day
