Clean install of windows 10 .... Grrrrr

Ok so updated 8.1 pro to windows 10. I purchased a new ssd for windows 10, so pulled my main ssd and started the install of windows 10 from the downloaded ico as others have said I could do.

Windows 10 installed as home version and I can't activate.

Any ideas ? I thought the activation link was to the mobo ?

So you upgraded 8.1 to 10 first and activated that before installing on the new SSD?

Yes as I wanted a clean install. Everyone seems to think that is corect. I am confused

How did you managed to install 10 Home?

It won't activate as your machine has a 10 Pro license if it went from 8.1 Pro. You need to install 10 Pro and you will be good.

This is what confused me I downloaded the ISO which is universal I believe ?

If you have the ISO that i have, you get the option to choose between Home and Pro.

Yes, you have an option for Home or Pro to download as an ISO unless you chose to 'Upgrade this PC' as that will download and install the correct one for you.

yep same one i downloaded, i made a USB drive from that, i will do the whole thing again as quite sleep deprived with little ones running me ragged!

Obviously you know that you have to download the one that is compatible to the OS you have now. More info here

Which takes me to the same page. Do you choose pro when making the USB stick or when installing ?

You should have chosen Pro as the download, the rest should be straight forward

When you click on 64bit, which i presume you are after you are downloaded the media creation tool.

When it opens select 'Create Installation Media for another PC'

Then, select what you want to download from there. Select from the drop down boxes.

Thats ok. Just download the version that is compatible to the OS you are using now. For me, i was running just ordinary 8.1 so i had to select Win 10 Home edition.

Why out of interest did you use that over the default tool ?
