I need to help a friend clean up a mac's filesystem, are there any programs out there that are recomended, or is there anaything built-in. It's a G5 desktop with OS X, not sure of the version at the moment.

Onyx and Omniisksweeper are worth a try.

Use disk utility to Repair Permissions and delete any preference files left over from old apps.

Another quick method of cleaning up is to open up a terminal and type

sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
enter the password

This will run a set of maintenance scripts including repair permissions.
Hope that helps. :)

User > Home > Library > Caches

Macintosh HD > Library > Caches

Clear the contents of both the folders, and run the Terminal command shown by AJUK :)
