Clean Win7 install - checking for updates

Is there a way to trigger the Windows O/S updates after doing a clean fresh install of the O/S ?

If i choose Windows Update, from the start menu, it just sits there saying checking for updates... Even if i leave it overnight, it still sits there saying, checking for updates. I know beforehand it took a while, as it had to gather ALL the updates since the O/S came out, but nowadays it just doesn't want to do anything other than sit there checking for updates.

Is there a trick to give it a kick start ?

Thanks strange thing is that i had to do number 2 first as number 1 said it wasn't applicable to my enviroment, but after running number 2, i ran number 1 and it worked. so rebooting now.

This was for a 64 bit install BTW, didn't try the 32bit msu's.
