Hey,

Took my PC apart today to find out why it was overheating and to give it a good clean ahead of a new soundcard arriving. Good news is I found the problem - 4 fans not running, 2 terminal with bearing issues.

Dropped the new sound card in and put it back together - powered up OK so I put it back under the desk (separate room ) and when I turned it on the monitor didn't display an image.

Assuming it didn't like the new soundcard I pulled it out and tried again with no luck. Next I changed the leads powering the gfx card to make sure there was nothing wrong there. Same result.

Tried pulling a stick of memory just in case that was the culprit but still no joy. At this point I've run out of obvious ideas and could do with some fresh ideas on this one.

Just about to try plugging it into a different monitor but not expecting major results....

Any ideas most welcome!

I'll shoot yet another plan of action at you which is also worth a try:

Presumably the all-important CPU fan at least is working? Even if it is, try removing the CPU cooler and clean the old thermal paste off, add new, and replace it. That worked a treat for me one time. Did you do that as part of cleaning the PC already?

Extreme overheating (I don't know how much in your case) can be caused by a poorly seated CPU cooler (could have been knocked a bit out of place or whatever), or not very good paste that has reached the end of its effectiveness.

Popping the CMOS battery out worked nicely! :)

I didn't do the thermal paste this time as the heatsink wasn't as badly coated in dust as I was fearing. The fan with the broken bearing was the CPU fan which basically failed to cool the CPU at all.

Coupled with the rear fan failing I'm surprised things didn't get a lot worse!
