Cleaning a turbo

Looking for recommendations on cleaning a Variable vain turbo, I don't mind paying for it to be done if needs be if anyone can recommend anyone near leeds area?

Seen many guides using oven cleaner (odd idea but yeh) in the exhaust side and working the actuator a lot and flushing it out afterwards. Does anyone have experience of this and how easy is it?

Reason for doing this is overboost and a serious lack of power at times. Trying this before giving up and replacing the turbo or going to an expert

What turbo / car is it? A lot of the A3 TDi guys use Mr Muscle oven cleaner and squirt it in a particular hole/feed with some success stopping the vains from sticking.

Astra 1.7 Cdti. Z17DTH is the engine/turbo model i believe
Id just love to get to the bottom of this power dip. Long motorway drives are the worst problem for me, do 40 mins cruise to end of the M180 / M18 junction. When i get there i have no power its like driving without a turbo u can just hear the engine struggling to do anything. Its had a remap too but no EGR delete ( but i may if it turns out this isnt working correctly either )

Did this exact thing on my Mondeo TDCi variable vane turbo, using Mr Muscle too.

Maybe try giving the EGR a clean as well. I took mine off my old megane which had a similar problem and it was thick with sludge. Toothbrush and some carburettor cleaner and it was as good as new, for a while! Did help though.

One thing i thought about checking too is the vacuum solonoid for the turbo? If this was playing up would i get the same symptoms?

@Lee

Will get EGR delete and blanking plates if needs be rather than mess with the EGR there notorious to fail on astra's

The EGR sludge would still need cleaning out before you blank it off as the EGR sits in the intake pipe between intercooler and the engine and the sludge starts to block off the intake pipe.

Here's a few generic Mondeo pics to show how blocked they can get. Mine was like the first pic but a friends was worse than the 2nd pic and barely ran.

Anyone in the Wiltshire area willing to assist me with such a task?

It's an easy enough job for a beginner to do. I just hate the prospect of doing mine since you have dismantle a load of engine trim bits and it doesn't matter what I'm working on, if something has clips, I will break three quarters of the clips required to hold the part on regardless of how slowly I take it. So the thought of having to remove the trim in the engine bay fills me with foreboding.

My 530d E60 has now covered a whopping 112k, I've removed the EGR valve twice in my 6 year ownsership. Both times, it's needed little more than a wipe over.

1.8 and 2.0L Mondeo's seem to be particularly bad for sooting up and those EGR's above have all done over 100,000 miles. It gets worse in the mondeos intake manifold where there's even less room so the soot builds up faster! It's usually caused by lots of quick low mileage trips (i.e nipping to the shops etc) where as long motorway miles reduces this "sooting" build-up by a huge amount.

Spoke to the guy who did my remap he's going to egr delete it but he's recommended I clean the egr section after the throttle body regardless as it will be caked up there and the inlet pipe after. So toothbrush and carb cleaner will be my tools for the weekend it seems. Good fun
