I was wondering what the best way to clean my Freezer 64. Currently it seated right onto the mobo but i don't want to unseat the thing if i can help it as it a bit of work to get it back onto the cpu properly.
hehe - mostly it will be dust that the fans have sucked in.The heat sink will be covered with it. In the past i have just blasted it with the air duster but as you know with the fan on one end it hard to clear it completely.
Should i somehow take the fan off but i think that will involve unmounting the thing
Is this the original freezer 64? With my original one you can easily unmount the fan using a small screw driver to unscrew the four screws on the top of the heatsink. I then just get a vacuum cleaner and hoover the hell out of it with the brush attachment so that it gets between the metal plates. I normally do mine outside of the case though... Static may be a problem inside the case.
As per Subliminal Aura's post, an air duster is great for removing the dust on the fins and the fan itself. The fan itself easily un-clips, so it's an easy job to remove it and clean with a soft cloth.
the compressed air won't make the dust go away, it simply blow it to somewhere else in your case... Besides if the dust is thick then the compressed won't be effective.
as said the fan on frezer 64 pro can simply be uncliped so cleaning both heatsink and fan couldn't be easier.
First unmount the fan, then gently slide a toothbrush across, or up the fins (depending on which direction the heatsink is mounted). You should find that the bristles on the toothbrush have removed, and collected any dust that was clogged between the fins. I know it sounds kinda funny but it works a treat.
PS I wouldn't advise using the toothbrush on your teeth afterwards though.
