I feel a bit stupid making this thread but today i got my first pair of glasses for reading, computer and driving etc. Now i've only had them since this afternoon and i noticed dust gathered on the lenses and i tried cleaning with cloth in the case, also got a few finger prints on them. After trying to clean it looks like the dust/dirt just doesn't want to come off, seems cloudy/oily.

I tried to use a bit of water but they just won't clean. Now i have serious issues with stuff like this if it's not perfect or clean i can get annoyed, like with my laptops etc i just need them to be perfect and no marks. But i'm not too obsessed:o;).

So what tips do you have to clean them? Should i buy anything specific or just use the cloth provided? Also i'm not sure if they have been coated for scratch resistance, should i get this done?

Cheers!

A little washing up liquid in the water will take everything off. Thats what I was told by my optician so it won't take off any protective coatings either.

The cloth that came with the glasses or any specific type? Is it worth paying for scratch resistant coating? (i don't believe i got it on them).

If your glasses are really dusty run under a tap to remove dust, Then use the cloth supplied in your case.

I managed to scratch my non scratch lenses because i had tile dust on them whilst cleaning, £280 pound down the drain

You've got to be careful of what type of cloth you use so as to not scratch the coating, warm water with washing up liquid is good to cut the grease off, but don't use bog roll or kleenex, use a microfibre-type of cloth (your glasses should have been provided with some).

When I used to work on yachts regularly I had a lot of salt water get onto my glasses so always used to give them a bit of a soak in hot soapy water before drying them with a cloth. All the glasses I've owned have always lasted me many many years. The only reason I change is style (my prescription hasn't changed in 12 years).

This will become the bain of your life I'm afraid. It's one of the many curses of having to wear glasses...

I use my shirt to clean them, or metal polish like the other day to get a scratch and some paint overspray off them ;)

I only have 1 rule

Never use Tissues.

It horrifies me when i take my glasses to Vision Express in Hereford and ask them to tighten the screws and then see them clean it with tissues afterwards when i went there the first time, the second time I ask them don't bother to clean it and they couldn't figure out why, bloody idiots.

Other than that, usually I just use my T-shirt or work shirt. But got to be a clean shirt, otherwise you are just moving the dirt/grease around. If I can find a bathroom then some soapy water, and then using my mouth and blow the water to the edges leaving to water droplets. That usually does the trick 99% of the time, I hardly ever get out the proper spray and proper micro fibre cloth out anymore and there is not a single visible scratch on my glasses.

I just use a microfiber cloth and if that isn’t around my shirt or hanky, never managed to damage the lenses.

My glasses have an anti glare coating on, which i find makes them smudge a lot easier.. sadly d&a put this on all their thinned down lenses so it was either have this or have big fat lenses

Theres 2 ways of cleaning, ive been wearing mine for like 14 years now and ive picked up a few tricks, one of them has already been mentioned.

Rub washing up liquid into them and steaming hot water to remove it all, then use a dry cloth to mop up the water and then get a tissue and rub the lenses.

When out and about a gentle breath of air onto them and a soft wipe from your tshirt ot something soft will often clean them..

Dont go buying any crap as its not needed.

I spend many many hours a day, everyday at a PC, i work on one and game on one often in my spare time. As a result, although my eye-sight is super sharp, i've become short-sighted. Recognising people walking down the street is becoming very hard until they are merely several feet away.

But still, wearing glasses and conceding a vital part of my body has failed is not something i'd do,ever. Contacts, perhaps. I just hate them.
