ello, got an AMD athlon 1300 cpu here thats got cooling crap encrusted on the top, are there any household products i can use to clean it off ?? bare in mind these old athlons have transistors mounted on the surface ! looks like it was an idiot who fitted this CPU given the ammount of stuff he has used...

cleaning hardened gunk off an old athlon cpu, what can i use?

i cleaned up a barton 2500 a couple of days ago that was solid with gunk.
used isopropyl alchohol and cue-tips.
the die cleaned easy, the gunk just around the die edges took a while longer, but gentle pressure and rubbing eventually got it all off.
