Just recently aquired my memory foam mattress back from my brothers flat where I used to live a few months back and the cheeky ******* has been using it in his bedroom after I left.

Now he's a heavy smoker and it stinks quite badly of smoke when I lie in it.
Short of buying a new mattress is there anything I can do to clean the mattress and get it smelling a bit nicer? I've tried febreezing it but no joy :(

Wash any covers, of course.

Quality memory foam mattresses are not porous like you'd think (totally unlike a sponge or other foam materials). The pores that are in are very tight and small. This also helps them from collecting dust and mites and such that you would collect in an ordinary mattress. Because of this, you can get away with a mild detergent (dish soap) and warm water to wipe it down. Make sure the towel you're using isn't too wet, wipe it quickly, then dry it off with another towel quickly. You don't want to leave moisture on it for long.

Let it air dry for a couple hours before putting covers or other bedding back on it.

If that fails, flip it. The mattress will, over time, air itself out but if it is upside-down the smell shouln't be as noticable.

You just need to play it some Paul Mckenna tapes overnight and it should then be fine.

It will however kill you if the correct phrase is heard from your clock radio on the 27th of November

Maybe memory foam mattresses are good for convivial overtures after all.

Never thought about the problem of cleaning 'after session'. Hmm.

I washed the cover that came with it so that doesn't smell anymore, but the smell seems to still be seeping through still! I left it out to air on our landing whilst I took the cover off and washed it but it's not really done much.

I've attacked it with febreeze aswell which made it better at the time obviously, but then when I got into it the smell crept back.

Found this....
Removing Odors from Memory Foam

Odors from stains (especially urine or vomit) and from the air (such as cigarette smoke) can linger in foam. To remove odors, try any one (or more) of the following methods:
  • Sprinkle the entire mattress/topper/pillow with baking soda and allow to sit overnight. Vacuum thoroughly with hand vac or soft brush attachment.
  • Using a citrus-based cleaning product, spray the foam piece(s) lightly, and allow to dry. Vacuum thoroughly.
  • Try a commercially available product such as Febreze (Proctor & Gamble) or FreshCare (Clorox), which are often effective at eliminating or reducing odors.
Might try these and hope they work!

Bicarbonate of soda works quite well. I've used it after the little ones "accidents". spinkle generously, leave overnight then a thorough vacuum.
