Got the phat ps3 and recently it sounds like its going to take off, even if im streaming a moving the fan ramps up full blast so.............

I bought a can of compressed air to try and clean the bad boy out. Anyone done this to the PS3 before not sure on a good plan of attack.

Or should I just stick it in a hole and go nuts (that sounds bad)

If it's a 40GB Fat, there is a thing called a 'Fan Test' mode, you switch power off at the back, hold eject button then click power at the back to on, fans go mental for a couple of minutes and blow out all the crap. There is a school of thought that this does damage to your PS3, but there are others who say that as you're only doing this once a year maximum that it does no damage at all, which i believe, worked a treat for me, up to you if you want to take the risk though.

Compressed air will be fine aswell, won't do any damage.

yer done he fan test a few times and it helps for a little while but then starts going mad again a few days later. Think it just needs a helping hand

In that case, just go crazy with the compressed air. If it's old enough that it's out of warranty, and i think it might be if it's the 40GB fat, i would think about opening it up and hoovering/using compressed air to give it a proper clean.

They are fairly easy to take apart - lot's of guides online. Strip that badboy down and get the hoover on it. I wouldn't go as far as removing the heatsinks though as I did that and I ended up in a world of hurt!!!

Your better off using a hover thats what i do on mine just hover the vents gets loads of rubbish out but all PS3 phats are noisy in nature mine always sounds like its about to take off can be worrying at first but there not a lot you can do really apart from either get a slim or turn up your TV lol

I sorted mine out, managed to get the pipe from the compressed air right against the fan, gave it a blast and the fan spun up and loads of crap blow out the back.

Fan noise is back to normal now
