I've bought a second hand one off ebay and it stinks of smoke, sticky with tar and crumbs in the corner, the two big shoulder buttons are also a bit clicky compared to my new one.
anybody got any tips? Lemon juice and a wipe over?

That's rank mate, I'd take it apart maybe soak the shell in something I've done this with a few controllers including the PS2 one.

the waft of it as I opened the package knocked me back. I'm an ex social/drunken/stress smoker and Weirdly enjoy the smell of different brands, mostly trough positive connotation but this is just rank!

surprised plastic can absorb smell tbh, as above, i would take it apart, place the shell and rubbery bits in a bowl with fairy liquid in it for a couple of days.

it could just be the grime in the cracks which is causing the smell rather than the actual controller.

the other bits (electronics) i would put near a scented candle whilst the shell soaks.

don't know how effective the above would be but i reckon time is the only thing which will work 100%.

i would change the "fairy" water every 24 hours too, to ensure it was clean.

maybe 3 days should do it?

The most effective solution I have found, providing you are handy with a screwdriver and have no problems taking a device apart and putting it back together, is to soak the plastic bits in bleach water (about 1 cup bleach to 1 gallon water) for 1/2 hour. Meanwhile, use isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab to clean the electronic parts. Rinse the plastic bits off and wipe them down, shake them out to get as much water out of cracks as possible, let them set and air dry for a few hours, then reassemble.

And just realised it's not actual dualshock =/

Silly me, not a HUGE issue but feels weird getting no feed back when driving.

I'd just buy a new one and maybe keep that one as a spare
