I've managed to get some dust on the sensor of my D50, as such it's showing up in every photo I take!

Any easy/cheep way to clean it?

There isn't really an easy way but the following is (comparably) cheap.

The first thing you should try is this:

  • Get a Rocket Blower
  • Go into your bathroom and turn the shower on (hot)
  • Wait until the bathroom is steamy and go get your camera
  • Put the camera on a tripod and angle it facing the floor
  • Remove the lens from the camera body and lock the mirror up
  • Fire the rocket Blower into the body of the camera which will hopefully remove the dust.
  • Drop the shutter
  • Re-attach the lens
  • Take camera off the tripod and go test it to see if you've got it or not

If this fails you can get sensor cleaning swabs which are two part system - the first swab cleans the sensor with some liquid cleaner and the second one dries it off. You will need to do the same as the above, just swab it once you've got rid of the dust.

I've had mixed results with this - sometimes it works wonders and other times it leaves more marks on the sensor than I started with. It's also pretty scary the first time because you really, really don't want to scratch the sensor.

However, the only real alternative is sending it off which is both expensive and leaves you without a camera for some time.

I see no advantage to using it in a steamer bathroom, only more chance for moisture to get inside the camera.

The sensor swab works fine for me, and hundreds of thousands of other people. Only the really stubborn dust spots cause a problem. You can actually apply a fair amount of force to the sensor housing. The sneosr itself is under several layers of glass an AA filters etc.

Tried the rocket blower technique, worked fine so I now have a nice clear sensor and mirror assembly.

Thanks for the advice guys
