doing an upgrade and i knowwww the thermalright ultra extreme 120 is gunna be a bit dusty :p

now going to do the usual can of air and a paintbrush and clean off all my components....but how do you guys (and gals :) ) get the nitty gritty off the heatsink fins?

the canned air well get rid of most but there's always that thin layer of particulate that is like film covering them... what's the best way to get rid of this muck?

chuck it in a bowl of hot soapy water? xD (semi serious about it....)

what ya think? bowl of water? cleaning agent on a wool string and pull it between all the fins? just keep using my lungs on it?

Well the last time I cleaned a heatsink, I got the paintbrush bristles to sort of separate between the fins.

The bristles where also long enough to get deep into the center of the heatsink.

yeaa that's what i've been trying on previous occasions but it just doesn't seem to move the stuff righttttt in there... :( hence the soak idea xD.... dish washer maybe? :p

Could use the tried and tested way of how to flush rads out in a watercoling setup bw soaking it in vinegar for a while then blowing it out.

Putting a heatsink in the dishwasher...now theres a new one.
xD never know :p

ahhh that's a good idea! i guess i just rinse it after yea.. remove any vinegar residue? which particular vinegar do they use

Wash it under the batroom shower on power setting. Ive done this loads of times. And it doesnt effect the finish. Dry in the airing cupboard overnight.

good plan! :)

I used to give mine a blast with my dads air compressor.

yea, where i worked previously they had compressed air lines and i used one to blow the dust out of the ancient workstation and it was like a dust storm xD but dammmmm was it clean after!

my car has a repair kit rather than a spare, and in the kit is an air compressor that plugs into the cigarette lighter, haven't used it yet but could be an idea fit a small nozzle on the end and you should get a nice blast of air.

cheers all :) shall see how i get on tomorrow once all my new bits arrive, i pull this rig apart and then re-build it :D

Putting a heatsink in the dishwasher...now theres a new one.

I've put many engine parts in the dishwasher and they come out like new :D

I've always found compressed air and a brush cleans it up enough for my liking! If I get it 'like new' clean then it'll only be the same again within a few hours I should think!

here are my findings :)

(pics to follow)

i first took the heatsink off and cleaned off the thermal paste (dont want that gunk getting on stuff) using some industrial meths and a sock.... that's right a sock :p

i found that the sock is good for holding the spirit and all the gunk sticks to it :) also doesn't leave any fluff behind.

i took to it with a paint brush then to get rid of most of the dust into the hover. i then used my bicycle pump with a nozzle and blew away the dust.

next up it took a soak in some warm soapy water :p swished it around a bit then rinsed it off in the shower.

now just letting it dry with a fan on it near the radiator :) looks clean and shiny :D probably polish the top once it is completely dry ;)
