whats the best stuff for cleaning the inside of an oven? the oven in our student house is the worst ive ever seen... don't think it's ever been cleaned its life, so decided to be brave and give it a go.

was wondering if cilit bang would do the job, but it doesnt mention ovens on the bottle.

what would you use for cleaning the dirtiest oven ever?

first person to say "elbow grease" or mustard gets a whack.

mr muscle do some kind of over cleaner stuff that you spray on then leave for a but and wipe off. it does stink to high heaven though so open the windows.

Get some proper oven cleaner - Mr Muscle or something. Spray, leave for an hour, then scrub clean - should be dead easy. Make sure you ventilate the room and protect the floor beneath the oven before spraying. Thats stuff is pretty nasty.

Edit - oh and get some rubber gloves as well.

I would also wear a solvent spray mask, Mr Muscle does have nasty fumes. Have you tried licking the oven clean? mmmm burnt grease

My chemist neighbor swears by using MEK, methyl ethyl ketone. It's seriously nasty stuff but it works like magic. Be sure you've turned the gas off if you use it.

MEK is evil stuff! Great for degreasing, and also for burning anything and everything! If you use it make sure it has evaporated before you heat the oven up! :p

My missus just point-blank refuses to clean the oven, so it defaults to me.. I use the above method, works a treat :)

She also refuses to cut the grass in the summer so it falls to me to do it, despite me never being at home to enjoy the garden as opposed to her two half-day shifts per week

rant over :p

CIF Oxy Power Gel With Hot Water on a warm oven and one of those soft steel wool pan scrubs from wilkos (not the ones for getting rust off a bike wheel lol) cant find a piccie, thy do exist though, takes 5 mins

;)

Steam Buggy 4TW

It's great, you clean with the power of steam and no nasty chemicals. Does honk a bit and your at a disadvantage if you were glasses

The only think I've bought from a Shopping Channel that I still use.

A helpful tip. Run the oven on 220C for 40 minutes prior to cleaning. Once the 40 mins is up, turn it off at the mains and begin to clean it immediately before it cools down. The dirt and grime comes off really easy.

Mr Muscle oven cleaner is the daddy for cleaning ovens.

If it's as bad as ours was (years of neglect) then you may have to do it 2 or 3 times to get it completely clean (took me most of a day between applying, leaving to soak and scrubbing).

I got back from Egypt on Friday to find that one of the other guys (company flat) had got pizza topping all over the glass bit in the door and cleared off without cleaning it - I was livid at the state of my shiny clean oven

Mr Muscle recommends you use it on a cold oven (probably to do with fumes). It works perfectly well when applied cold.

Is that like, not a bit dangerous you know? I'm no expert, but I don't think that my marigolds will stand much in the way of heat, and I doubt they'll insulate me from the heat either.

You might pick up a few scalds but it's better than standing with your head in the oven for hours on end. This way, it only takes about 10 minutes before you're done :)

Mrs Nelson cleaned ours at the weekend with the new Cif stuff. It worked a treat and with no natsy fumes or chemical burns. The bottom of the oven did need doing twice to get rid of the really nasty bits but the rest came up as good as new with only one go at it.

Put a pan of hot water in the oven as yourun it at a hot temp.. the fatty deposits and grime will fall off.. Be quick to clean it as it does start to set quite fast..

Hot water= best thing to get rid of greasy grime..
