Is it ok to use white spirit as the solvent as im all out of alchohol type stuff.

all im doing is swapping a stock heatsink on a 7800gtx to an artic one.

i dont think it will be the best.
White spririt on have 40-50% alcohol. the rest is water and etc which you do not want it to be on your core.

Try find a small bottle of alcohol from boots, or any leading super market. Acetone from nail polisher might do.
 
I wouldn't use nail polish remover... tends to corrode things.
I expect white spirit would be ok, i use meths and that always works well.
 
I imagine lemon juice would leave a residue.
Why shouldn't white spirit be used? Apparently its just alcohol and water.
 
Last weekend i found myself removing AS5 from a variety of things. I had some 90% Isopropyl Alcohol and it did OK, but not great. I went to the store and nabbed a bottle of 90% acetone (professional grade nail polish remover, nothing but acetone, water, and denaturium) and it cut through the paste much better.

I don't know if you've ever used it, but it leaves fatty residues. Not good, you don't want it on your hardware. I think isopropyl alcohol is the best thing to use, and it's cheap ;)

You can probably find it at your nearest gas station, not sure about the english word for it, maybe anti-icer or condensation remover? :p I don't know...

That would be a petrol station, so called because it supplies petrolium spirit, not 'gas', and i expect we invented them. :rolleyes: ;)

We have de-icer but i believe thats a cocktail of wierd and wonderful chemicals... :confused: Certainly smells wierd and i've never heard of using that for cleaning chips...
 
You could buy a CD lense cleaning kit and it comes with a little container with a label on saying "isopropyl alcohol" :)

It only cost me £1.99 aswell :) and also 90% alcohol :)

In US petrol is called gas ;) . As said, I don't know the english word for i unfortunately. Directly translated would be condensation remover :p

Think i'll stick to using meths myself. Can probably get a whole bottle for the price of a cd lense cleaning kit, and it seems to do a good job.

Its been censored for ages and i still get caught out.

Lets just hope the meths doesn't kill hardware like it kills tramps eh... :p

its short for gasoline lol

the reason why you shouldnt use white spirits is because 9 tiems out of ten its not going to be white spirits !
its amazing how many people still call turpentine substitute 'turps' etc, yet i bet none of them have ever laid hands on REAL turpentine...
my point is this, a lot of people mis read somethign for another thing, appyling their own little 'brand' or trade mark to it. one mans idea of nailvarnish remover is another mans idea of acetone

just use isoproponol.

Little story, when i was at uni we were mucking about in one of the Petrology labs and somone dared me to drink the clear liquid from the plastic squirty bottle.

Naturally we all thought it was Distilled water but it turned out to be isopropyl and let me tell u chaps it tastes like **** :O

what the i was thinking i have no idea but i was young and stupid and usually drugged up to my eyeballs.

No swearing! FF.
 
When I was reworking my pc, I used white spirit to clean up my cpu from the AS5, and all worked just fine from what I can see, and I mean...at least everything still works. I just got lots and lots of spare Qtips, dabbed them in some white spirit, then slowly and carefully worked over the cpu until all was gone. Not the most ideal process I know, but if your careful and dont just chuck it on, no white spirit should get inside anywho. This was only done however as it was all I had to hand at 2am when I decided a rework was in order..and im impatient! :)
