I cant be bothered to reinstall things on my pc again. I tried yesterday and after the first restart after reinstalling it said 'NTLDR missing' So i fired up my other drive with a clone of windows on and went back to normal.

What is the best way to clear up unused registry items and temporary junk?

On my pc all i have running is -

Nod32
Diskkeeper
Daemon tools
sound blaster audigy 2zs stuff

On restart I am running around 40 processors

1. Uninstall all the programs you no longer need/use

2. Start - run - msconfig - startup tab - disable all the programs that you dont need to start when windows loads/starts.

3. Download and run Ccleaner HERE and that will clean out all the junk and clean up the registry.

Ccleaner is the best in my experience. I don't think extra information in the registry really degrades performance much at all unless its a startup entry. Unfortunately I find XP can be quite hard to clean up and restore to the original speed and reliability of a fresh install, whereas vista seems to run quite well regardless of extra junk being present (startup programs excluded). One thing that will help is making sure windows is up to date with SP3 at least, sometimes even installing a service pack can cure problems with system files, much in the way a repair install might.

Thanks. I'll run ccleaner tonight. By using hijack this i have got the processes down to 35. The majority of things are rivatuner, diskkeeper and nod32.

Theres still some random rubbish listed on the hijack this page but i think it will never be totally clean unless i format and reinstall

Well running ccleaner seemed to resolve the problem with a slow usb port when using my memory card reader. great stuff.

It also cleared a load of other crap off my machine. Thanks
