clear type under icons

can someone remind me how to make the type clear under the icons on my desktop

Odd, are you using a wallpaper that has solid colour where your icons are? Particular solid colours will stop the drop shadows from appearing.

That might be why then. The best way to test if the drop shadows are actually working is to switch your desktop to the Bliss default for a moment and see if they appear, if they do then it's the wallpaper and there's not much else you can do.
